Amazon has started letting a small group of US customers shop by text message with Alexa for Shopping, its AI shopping assistant. The first invitations went out on November 6, 2026, and Amazon says millions more customers will get access in the coming weeks, just ahead of the holiday peak. Details come from PPC Land’s report on Amazon’s announcement and from TechCrunch.
How does Alexa for Shopping text ordering work?
Invited customers accept terms, link a phone number and message a contact called “Alexa Shopping”, which can search, compare, build carts, buy and send delivery updates, according to PPC Land’s reading of Amazon’s post. Customers not yet invited can join a waitlist, which PPC Land notes also signs them up for Amazon marketing texts.
Amazon said the number of customers using the assistant’s agentic features has grown more than eightfold since the start of the year, but gave no base figure, as PPC Land points out. TechCrunch frames the launch as following Amazon’s September block of Meta’s Muse agent from its site.
Why does text-based shopping matter for brands and sellers?
It shrinks the shelf further. A text reply has room for only a few products, so whichever items the assistant names capture nearly all the attention. PPC Land notes that Amazon has not explained how those items are chosen, how Shop Direct products from outside stores rank against Amazon’s own, or whether sponsored placements will appear in text threads.
It also gives Amazon a direct messaging line. Amazon says the thread will eventually carry order updates, delivery notifications and deals. Brands running their own SMS programmes would compete with a contact that already knows the customer’s history. That is our interpretation, not an Amazon statement.
Approval is another open point. Amazon’s post describes purchases made “with your approval” but also auto-buy at a target price, and does not explain how consent works in a text thread, according to PPC Land. Treat the agent-buying model as still unsettled.
Timing raises the stakes: Black Friday falls on November 27, 2026. For wider context, follow our AI & Tech coverage.
What should sellers do before Black Friday?
There is little to act on directly yet, because Amazon has published no ranking or ad rules for text. These steps are low-regret:
- Audit product data: titles, attributes and reviews feed the comparisons the assistant gives, so fix gaps in your top sellers first.
- Test your products in Alexa for Shopping with natural-language queries and note which items get named.
- Check Shop Direct eligibility if you sell off Amazon. PPC Land reports a free self-service portal launched on November 4.
- Ask your Amazon Ads rep whether Sponsored Products or Sponsored Brands prompts will run in text.
- Review your own SMS flows for reorders and promotions, and watch for changes in repeat-purchase behaviour.
Monitor Amazon’s announcements for details on ranking, advertising and consent, as none have been published.
