Alphabet’s Q3 2026 results put Google Search & other revenue at $63.35 billion, up 12% year over year, and Google said lower monetization in AI Mode weighed on that growth. At the same time it is extending ads in AI Mode to ten more markets and launching ads in follow-up questions in the US, as reported by Search Engine Journal.

What did Google say about AI Mode ads in Q3 2026?

Google said AI Mode ads are expanding and that AI Mode currently earns less than traditional search. According to Search Engine Journal, Search & other growth has slowed from 19% in Q1 and 17% in Q2, and revenue was essentially flat on Q2. Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler named currency, retail and post-World Cup media spending first, then said strong AI Mode query growth hurt revenue growth through lower monetization. He did not say what AI Mode earns less than, or by how much.

The expansion covers Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Brazil, Mexico and the UK are planned for Q4 2026. In the US, multiturn ads will appear in follow-up queries. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible by default, with no separate opt-out.

Total Google advertising grew about 10.6% to $82.0 billion, per PPC Land. Search Engine Roundtable noted Alphabet’s stock fell more than 11% in after-hours trading.

Why does lower AI Mode monetization matter for SEO?

It shows Google is willing to trade short-term revenue for AI Mode usage, so expect AI surfaces to keep growing. Sundar Pichai said:

“Just like our shift to mobile over a decade ago, we are focused on building the best Search user experience, followed by monetization.”

Google also says many AI Mode queries are upper-funnel and incremental. That is interpretation, not data, but it suggests early-research queries are moving into AI answers, where ads are still maturing. Google’s own claim that click-through rates on sponsored and organic product items in AI Mode are similar rests on internal US data from August 20 to September 3, 2026.

For publishers and organic teams, the gap is traffic. Pichai cited “billions of clicks” to websites in Q2, but the Q3 materials, per Search Engine Journal, give no clicks figure. We learn how Google earns from AI Mode, not what it sends to sites.

How should advertisers prepare for ads in AI Mode?

Reach depends on your campaign setup, because advertisers cannot target AI Mode directly. Practical steps:

  • Audit which campaigns use broad match, AI Max, Shopping or Performance Max; per Google’s help page these qualify for AI-powered placements, while exact and phrase match mainly serve on direct commercial intent.
  • Review negative keywords and brand exclusions, which still apply.
  • Check your website copy: AI explainers are generated by Gemini from public sources, including the advertiser’s site, and you cannot edit or opt out.
  • Expect blended reporting: AI Mode results sit inside aggregate campaign and search terms reports, so watch search terms for exploratory queries.
  • If you operate in the newly added markets, note the help page lists English as the supported language.
  • Organic teams: track branded and informational traffic in Search Console, since Google has published no AI Mode click data.
