Google is now testing ads in AI Mode for people who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence. That reverses the ad-free approach Google described for this experience in March. An updated help document explains that information drawn from connected apps may now be used to personalize the ads those users see.

Is Google showing ads in AI Mode with Personal Intelligence?

  • As reported by Search Engine Roundtable, Google told Search Engine Land it is “starting to test ads in AI Mode in Search for users who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence.”
  • In March, Google said there were no ads for users who connected apps to AI Mode. It added at the time that it expected ads to work similarly for them in the future.
  • According to Google’s updated help page, ads will not be based directly on a user’s Gmail inbox or Google Photos library. However, summaries, excerpts and inferences from connected apps may be used to show ads.
  • Google also says advertisers will not get access to connected apps, and sensitive categories such as health or religion will not be used to personalize ads.

How do AI Mode ads change targeting for advertisers?

Ads in AI Mode are not new. What changes is where they can appear. Personal Intelligence users are likely some of the most engaged AI Mode users, because they have chosen to share context from their apps. Until now, that group was off-limits to advertisers.

The bigger shift is in the targeting signal. Ads have usually matched a query and the user’s interests. Here, Google is adding inferences drawn from personal app data. Google stresses that raw Gmail or Photos content is not used directly, but the line between “inferences” and “direct” use is Google’s own framing. Expect privacy scrutiny and possible pushback from users.

For advertisers, this is another surface where Google decides placement, not you. The announcement mentions no separate opt-in or setting. For SEO teams, more paid units inside personalized AI answers means more competition for attention next to organic citations in AI Mode.

It is also a test. Google has not said how widely it is running, which markets it covers or what ad formats it uses.

How to prepare your Google Ads account for AI Mode ads

  • Check your reporting: watch for changes in AI Mode–related impressions, clicks and conversion rates in Google Ads, and segment them wherever the interface allows.
  • Strengthen landing pages: traffic from highly personalized answers may arrive with very specific intent. Make sure your landing pages answer detailed, context-rich needs.
  • Review your first-party signals: keep audience signals, product feeds and conversion tracking clean, since automated placements rely on them.
  • Brief stakeholders on privacy: if your brand works in a sensitive category, note that Google says sensitive categories are excluded from ad personalization. Still, think about how your ads might look next to personal answers.
  • Monitor organic visibility: track how often your brand is cited in AI Mode answers, and whether ads start pushing those citations lower.
